Hunter, a 2013 graduate of the WKU Veterans Upward Bound program, was one of only six students in the country to win one of these awards. There are 50 VUB programs in the United States.

He is the 10th WKU VUB student in the last 11 years to be selected for this award.

“I’ve been a college administrator for nearly 30 years and I can honestly say that Joe is one of the best and brightest students I’ve ever worked with,” said WKU VUB Counselor Rick Wright. “He is a dedicated student and a true gentleman in every way. Joe is a deserving winner of this scholarship and we’re very proud of him.”

Hunter is pursuing a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering at WKU.
